THE JUG BEER TRADE

ITS APPLICATION TO MAORIS

CAUTION BY THE BENCH

The Chairman of the Licensing Committee remarked yesterday in reference to the “jug” trade with Maoris that this was a matter upon which publicans should exercise special care. There was nothing in the Act to prevent jugs of liquor being supplied to Maoris so long as it was consumed on the premises, but the practice might lead to trouble under the, section prohibiting the salo of liquor for consumption away from licensed premises. There was no doubt the jug system was a very bad ono and might get a licensee into trouble in this way. For instance most of tho hotels had Maori rooms where a number of natives assembled, and on a jug being served out the landlord had little check on tho manner in which tho liquor was disposed of, and tho condition of tho persons ulio consumed it. Tboieforo in the interests of tho publican himself, who ran a certain risk in the. matter, the jug system should he stopped or discouraged as much as possible.
