Increased fares to be charged in future on the Waimata coaches are dealt with in an advertisement in this issue. John Aspen, a visitor from lteefton, died suddenly at South Hokitika early yesterday. He had been suffering from a strained heart, and was aged 35. The Chief Postmaster has received advice that parcels for the United States are to be sent forward on Auckland for despatch by Vancouver to Honolulu. Arrangements have been made for transit between Honolulu and United States. Sitting in civil jurisdiction yesterday morning, Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M., gavo judgment in one undefended civil case:*C. A. HeLautour (Mr. Stock) v. Geo. Stubbs, claim £lB 12s sd, costs £1 10s Od. Three cases were adjourned and four were struck out. At tho Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M., Edward John Burch was lined 10s, 2s costs, or IS hours, for being found drunk in Gladstone-road on Wednesday. A first offender was lined ss, with 2s costs, or in defaidt 21 hours’ imprisonment.
A Press Association telegram from Rotorua states that the thermal springs in the AA’liakarewarewa valley liavo been showing great activity lately. Some speculation has been caused in the district as to the reason for the sudden rising in Tikitapu, the beautiful blue lake near AVairoa, the level having risen some 10ft within a comparatively' short time. On the other hand, Lake Rotorua’s level has fallen. The question of ear-marking will he considered by the conferences of tho Farmers’ Union and the A. and P. Associations in AVellington next month. Mr. AV. Maddison, who has been in tlio South in connection with his ear-marking scheme, states that it has been well received, and he believes that the aforementioned conferences will recommend the scheme for adoption by the Government. AA’liile in the South Mr. Maddison was unable to make satisfactory financial arrangements for putting his scheme on the market.
