CRAWFORD ROAD

‘WORST ROAD IN THE BOROUGH.”

SEVERAL MATTERS DISCUSSED

Crawford lload received a lot of attention from the Borough 'Council last night. Thirty-two residents and property owners of Crawford Road presented a round-robin drawing attention to

the urgent necessity oi metalling this

street before the worst of tho winter sot in. They represented that there was no road in the Gisborne Borough

in such an impassible condition. “AA r e believe,” they wrote, “ that if the road were properly metalled and some gravel or cinders spread upon the footpath, the vacant Sections facing the road would bo speedily built upon, and the revenue of the Council considerably increased by rates. Several owners of sections desire to build shut are discouraged by the state of the road in winter time. Tradesmen also, do not care to send their delivery carts along the road, and some carters liavo charged double rates for delivery in this locality, which is within a low minutes’ walk of the Post Office. It was unfair to expect children to traverse this mud another winter.” The petitioners pointed out that tlio footbridge over the crock in Parau Street, which gives access to Crawford Road, was in need of repairs. A turnstile erected at one end would prevent horsemen from riding across. Some gravel was required for the descending approaches to the bridge.

Cr. Miller moved and Cr. Sawyer seconded, that the Engineer be instructed to' do what ho could to give relief.

This was carried after a very brief discussion, the opinion being expressed by Cr. Miller that “the worst road in the Borough” was the one to start upon.

Mr. J. AValter Bull, who is building cottages on the section at the corner of Parau Street and Craw’ford Road, asked that more attention be given to .’keeping the water tables and footpaths in repair. Portion of the formed footpath in Crawford Road had, lie understood, been improved at the expense of a private owner, who covered it with cinders, but now, owing to the neglected state of the road, the footpath was being used for wheel traffic. He requested that the Council form and spread with shingle the footpath at the terminating portion of Parau Street, open up the culvert at the intersection of Parau Street and Crawford Road, clean out the drains in the vicinity’ and give proper drainage to the adjacent creek. A further necessary. item, he claimed, was the repairing of the small footbridge, which was in a dangerous state. The most important matter was the metalling of Crawford Road, which would benefit the whole district.

It was stated that instructions had been given for the rail of the footbridge to be repaired. The Engineer will deal with the other matters, which were also raised in the foregoing petition. Air. Bull also asked if Crawford Road would bo served by the water mains, and if not would the residents have to pay rates on the water loan. .In reply to Cr. Sheridan, the Town Clerk said it was not in the reticulation but would have to pay rates. Cr. Miller said they had promised to see that' people who jiaid rates would get the water laid on. The discussion was not pursued.
