A SLIGHTED DEBUTANTE.
~ Although she was personally invited by King Oscar of Sweden to his Court, Mrs Ida von Claussen, a hotel proprietress of New York, did not go beciause Mr. C. H. Graves, tho American Minister to Sweden, would not present her. Mrs von Claussen brought her fiance to see Mr. Graves,', but- the Minister was obdurate. She has now returned to New York in a furious temper, vowing vengeance against Mr. Graves, and. has put her case before the State Department at Washington. If she does not get redress there she will go t° President Roosevelt and relate her grievance.
Mrs von Claussen, in an interview, says she doesn’t care two peanuts for Mr. Graves.
“My credentials are of the best,” she declares. “I met King Oscar at Weisbadon, and he said,‘Come right up and see me at Stockholm.’ ”
“Mrs Graves read a letter of mine before all the diplomats, and said slighting things about me. I went to see Mr. Graves with my fiance, Baron Lindberg, and said ho would have to give an explanation.
“Mrs. Graves said he would not discuss tho matter. My fiance, tho Baron, then spoke, but Mr. Graves was most abrupt.” Mrs von Claussen has received a letter from Mr. Bacon, the Assistant Secretary of State, saying that the ceremonial presentation of American citizens at foreign Courts is a matter wholly within the discretion of the American Ambassadors and Minsters. She is sure, however, that the President will overrule this, and she has negotiated for her passage back to Sweden to be presented.
