GISBORNE DEBATING SOCIETY.

AN) APPRECIATION. INTERESTING DEBATE TO-

NIGHT

“A Visitor” writes as follows

It is interesting to know that Gisborne has a- Debating Society of about a hundred members. I had a chat with a member and he informed me that tho Society is to be honored with a visit from Sir Robert Stout and Professor Bickertou, two wellknown public speakers who can always draw good houses and give satisfaction. The Society is a Parliamentary Debating Society, introducing one political subject once a month. The other evenings (Monday) are taken up with tho most interesting social questions. Already many of the younger members who were listeners for some considerable time now stand up and air thenopinions and are sometimes reminded that their time is up by a ring from the time bell. As many public speakers attribute their success to Debating Societies there is no doubt the ambitious young Gisborneite will take advantage of the local Debating Society and remember that many good public men are lost because they do not get tho opportunity to become good speakers; and Gisborne needs good public men •just as badly, as any other town or city. Tho hall in Palmerston-road which is used by the society could not very well be beaten. I feel sure that the public of Gisborne will value its society, and do all in their power to make it a thorough success, because fathers and mothers know that their sons and daughters will have a chance of receiving valuable information, and be taught how to deal with subjects logically, and gain information which will be of considerable value in time to come. To-night the Society has one of its most interesting subjects for debate: —“ls an Angle-Japanese Treaty Desirable?” Mr. Bloore takes the affirmative and Mr. McFarlane the negative, Tho evening is expected to be a great success.
