Although the output of gold constantly increases, yet the value of the precious metal does not fall. Skating with the wind, a mile has been covered in 2min 12 3-5 sec. That was in 1887, on the Hudson. Profits of British railways taxed last year amounted to 411 millions, and of mines to 21J millions.
As late as 1831 an unhapy little lad of nine was hung at Chelmsford for setting fire to a barn at Witham. It is calculated that 6800 millions of men have been killed in battle since tho beginning of the world.
