ALLEGED THEFT OF TOBACCO.
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR
TRIAL.

MASTEETON, last night. At tho Magistrate's Court to-day H. P. Johnson, storomnn at tho Railway Station, was charged with the theft of two boxes of tobacco, valued at £1 10s, tho property of tho Now Zealand Government, and O. R. Peterson, dealer, was charged with receiving tho tobacco from Johnson, knowing tho saino to bo stolon.
The evidence went to show that tho tobacco, which was consigned to a firm in Eketaluma, was kept in tho railway goodshed nearly a fortnight. Johnson then gavo it to Peterson who sold it to a local tobacconist for £7 17s 7d, both accused dividing tho proceeds. Two days later Peterson bought tho tobacco back and returned it to the Railway Station. Tho polico in tho meantime received certain information which led them to question Peterson, and he mado a statement confessing his guilt. Peterson pleaded guilty and was committed to tho Supremo Court for sentence. Johnson pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
