YESTERDAY’S MATCHES.
At the Victoria Domain yesterday tho hockey matches woro West /Slid versus To llau, and City versus Kia •-Kalin. There tvas a good number of spectators, and groat interest was taken in tho game. ■ WEST END v. TE KAO. This match took place on No. 1 ground, and was keonly contested from start to finish. From the fiully,o/f Past play ensued, and Glover, full-back for West End, got in a good drive, which was quickly followed up by his side, llrown with a neat bit of play relieved tho pressure, but Rico with a fine drive brought tho Jlay back again, in front of To Rail’s goal.- Hamilton, on this occasion, succeeded in getting his side out of dangor. Even play in midfield followed. Allen broko away and dribbled well down tho field, Dice stopping his career with a nice drive. To Rau with a good passing rush menaced their opponents’ goal, but Glover saved in the nick of time. To Rau again camo with a determined rush, and Olliver saved nicely. Mutu dribbled well, and Olliver again succeeded in averting a score. Olliver at this point of tho ganio was playing n splendid game. Rice camo up tho field with tho ball, dribbling well, but was stopped by Pino. To Ran attacked, and Olliver saved with a well-directed drive, which went out at centre. Coming again to the attack, To Rau (rusfliod tho ball in front of West End’s goal, where Dines succeeded in hitting a nico goal. West End livened up, and Rico made a good dribbling run and vory nearly scorod, but Brown, who was playing a splondid defensive game, manngod to avert-- the score. Mutu, who was also playing a good game, made a nico run up the field, and passed to Hoko, who hit out. Half-time was then called, the scores being: Te Rau, 1 goal; WestEnd, nil. Upon resuming West End attacked fiercely, but the defence shown by Te Ran proved too strong, and rush after rush proved fruitless. Pine and Brown did good work in defence. Olsen made a fine run and looked like scoring, but tho Te Rau goalkeeper, A. Coleman, stopped his progress in fine style. Dines and Ellison next showed up for Te Ran, and rushed the ball down the field at a great rate, only to be mot by Olliver, who, beating them for tho ball, drove it out at centre with a great drive. Te Ran livened up and made the pace very fast. Glover and Olliver put in some splendid defensive work for West End. Olsen made a good run, and Wi Friday saved.' Mutu then got going, and looked very like scoring, but Olliver again proved equal to the occasion, and prevented a score. McLaclilan made a nice dribbling run for West End, but Brown saved in- time, and Dines gained possession and made a brilliant run the whole length of the ground, but through over-eagerness to score failed to find the net. Te Ran continued to press their opponents till the whistle sounded, proving victorious by 1 goal to nil. For the winners all played hard games, Brown, Mutu, and Dines being the pick. For West End, Olliver, Rice, Olsen, and Glover played well. Mr. E. H. Pavitt had charge , of the whistle, and controlled the game in his usual efficient m'aniier. Messrs. ground and ended in a victory for Jvia Kalia by 4 goals to one. The teams took the field punctually at three o’clock, and from the bully-off very fast play ensued, City holding their own and getting.in some good work. Bailey and Wilson played well and made several attempts to score but without avail. Tho defensive play of the Kia Kalia backs was very sound, Garrett and Willock putting in a lot of good work in defending tlieir base. Tho second spell saw Kia Kalia on the aggressive. Bright made a splendid run from half-way and scored a fine goal. Shortly afterward from a passing rush of tho Kia Kalias Bright was. again successful in scoring. Armstrong next came into prominence, and dribbling well, nearly scored for City, Grant saving. From tlie corner hit' Armstrong made another determined effort but Pollock prevented the score. Kia Kalia at this point were playing well together and passing nicely. Miller got possession and making a good run from
the quarter-way scored another goal for Ivia Kalia, making the score Kia Kaha 3 goals, City nil. Upon resuming play the City team rallied, and after some exciting play, in which Doyle, Grinlinton and Armstrong did good work, succeeded in working their way into their opponents’ territory, where Davy scored their first goal. The Kia Kalias were not to be denied and came with a grand rush in which Bright again piloted the ball into the net, No
further score resulted, leaving Kia Kaha victors by 4 goals to 1. For the winners, Bright, Witty and Miiler were the pick of a good lot. Armstrong, Wilson, Bailey and Edwards played well for City. Mr. Jas. Sadler had control of the game and gave every satisfaction. Messrs. Thompson and O’Neill ' had charge of the line flags.
