VANCOUVER MAIL SERVICE
United Press Association —Copyngl t SYDNEY, May 30. Matters in. connection with the Vancouver service are still pending, as there is a probability of the service on greatly improved lines becoming' the principal medium of conveyance of English mails. This view is evidently before the mind of the Federal Government as an alternative if the mail syndicate’s contract falls through. It is well-known the Postmaster-General has a leaning towards the Canadian route, and favors the work being carried out if possible by ail Australasian company.
RELENTLESS OPPOSITION. Received May 30, 9.36 p.m. LONDON, May 30. Mr. Potter confirms the information cabled on the 25tli, and states: —We have forced our way through the most formidable . and relentless opposition of shipping companies opposed to the new mail scheme, whose interest is to hold bade the progress of Australia’s shipping, the better to conserve its selfish shipping monopoly to the detriment of Australian pro ducers and the travelling public My offer now before Australia not only safeguards the State’s joining in the interest of the guarantee as money payment offers can be used for purposes of insurance, but tends to a great botterment of their producing, commercial and other interests in every way. A plain proposition fraught with great national prospects now awaits an answer.
