HOKITIKA, yesterday
A young child named Goodfellow, seriously burned yesterday through its clothes catching fire, died during the night. ; CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. A little girl named Dolly Ryder, aged three years, daughter of the caretaker of Hobbs’ buildings, had a miraculous escape yesterday afternoon. The child’s parents occupy rooms on the top of the building, and the child was playing on the roof, which was walled in. She was chasing a cat over the roof ami slipped on an unprotected skylight, and fell through the glass, a distance of 30ft, into an empty room below. She was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the hospital. The child was very little cut or injured externally, but it is feared her spine is hurt badly 'and that she may bc'permanently crippled. AUCKLAND, yesterday. A man named Henry McLeod, employed by a restaurant keeper in Parnell, has been reported as missing since about 4 p.m. on the 21st. McLeod had been in ill-liealtli, and had recently come out of hospital. He was paralysed in the fight arm, and seemed to be in low spirits when last seen. Ho is 35 years of age.
DUNEDIN, Wednesday,
The Rev. Mr. Wood, Presbyterian minister, nearly met his death today. Tho Kaikorai car stopped at the High School, and Mr. Wood got off, carrying a. portmanteau. He attempted to cross in front of the car, which was starting again, and was knocked down and dragged a few feet. The driver and conductor extricated him unhurt. The promptitude and skill of the gripnmn saved Mr. Wood’s life.
At an inquest held at AA r aitahuna on the body of a Chinaman named Ah Kee, who was found hanging by the neck in liis hut on the preceding Sunday, a .verdict wes returned “That deceased committed suicide by hanging.” The Coroner remarked that the jury would not bo justified in adding to their verdict that the deed was committed whilst deceased was of an. unsound state of mind, because no evidence liad been led showing that such was actually the fact.
