The Union. Company’s steamer Tara worn,' -which left Napier on Monday afternoon, arrived at "Wellington at 6 o’clock to-niglit, after a boisterous passage. She met the full force A the southerly gale, and was liove-to all day yesterday. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The gale raged all last night. In the early evening snow fell to some extent, but melted immediately. 'Not much rain fell, but it was raining heavily this morning. The gale has abated. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The schooner "Morning Light, which arrived at Lyttelton from Collingwood yesterday, after a stormy passage of 17 days, lost a man overboard when Id miles N.N.E. of Lyttelton Heads. The schooner shipped a heavy sea over the port side at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, and the man was carried off. A lifebuoy with lights attached was thrown to him, and he was seen about 40i*t swimming for the buoy. A heavy sea struck him and he sank. The man shipped as Charles Roberts, but ft is stated that his real name is Harold llolfe, formerly of 11.M.5. Prometheus.
There was a gale last night, followed by beautiful weather. There was snow on the lower ranges, which has since disappeared. DUNEDIN, last night.
During the gale on Monday afternoon a gust struck the First Church Hall in course of construction and snapping the braces hurled the heavy framework of the roof into the middle of the building. No one was working there at the time. The wind also ripped the ornamental work from the steeple of the First Church. Ihe damage done is estimated at £l5O.
