“THE MIKADO” IN JAPAN

In reference to the withdrawal of the license of “Tlio Mikado,” LieutGolonel Newnbnm Davis mentions that some years ago a performance of the opera was announced at Yokohama. At the last moment a peremptory order came from Tokio to the effect that- the title was to be changed and all allusions to the Emperor removed. Tlio result was that the opera was played under the name of “Three Little Maids from School,” with the Mikado described as a Daimio. This is, we fancy (says the Rail Mall Gazette, referring to the action of the Lord Chamberlain), the first time a licensed play which has been running iu licensed theatres for nearly a quarter of a century, and the text of which has not. been altered in the smallest degree, has been interfered with in this way. Looking up the official “Regulations as to Theatres under the Jurisdiction of the Lord Chamberlain,” wo find the following clause:—“No offensive personalities or representations of living persons to bo permitted on tho stage, or anything calculated to produce riot or breach of the peace.”
