THE LONDON POLICE
ANOTHER BLUNDER
Once more the London police, usually so careful and efficient, liave been perpetrating an astounding and scandalous blunder. A lady was waiting in Regent-street,- at the corner of Air-street—rather a dubious locality —at a late hour in the evening, expectant of a husband and omnibus. She was suddenly pounced upon by the police, accused of “disorderly conduct.” and, despite her jirotestations, was promptly hauled off to durance vile. Next morning she was brought before a. magistrate, and some distinctly “hard swearing” was indulged in by the arresting constables, whoso superior officers, however, threw them 'overboard, and admitted that a serious and indefensible mistake had been committed. The lady was .instantly released without a stain on her character, witli profuse apologies from the Bench and the police for the infamous treatment to which she had so unwarrantably been subjected. I am glad to say, however, that her justly indignant husband has announced his intention of taking the matter further, and of leaving no stone unturned to obtain redress for a monstrous and indefensible outrage.'’ It is just as well that New Zealand ladies—as I was compelled to suggest ill reference to a previous case of this kind—should carefully noto this case, and take warning that according to present practice if they are seen waiting for a husband or an omnibus anywliero in the noigbourhood of Regent-street, Air-street, or Piccadilly Circus late in the evening, they ■ render themselves ipso facto liablo to ho thus infamously treated by unscrupulous members of the pplieo force eager to secure promotion for zeal. It is pot a pleasant possibility, but there it stands.
