A mass meeting of seamen and waterside workers at Poplar adopted a resolution thanking Mr. Hughes for his great service to seamen in connection with the Navigation Conference. Mr. Hughes explained the position of the Australian labor parties, and urged seamen to combine to improve tho conditions, which at present were disgraceful. He declared he felt humiliated when Englishmen were willing to replace at Hamburg the Germans who struck in order to obtain decent conditions.
