GISBORNE DEBATING SOCIETY

A mooting of tho Gisborno Debating Socioty was hold at the Choral Hall last ovoning, Mr. J. A. Connell being in tho chair. •

An olocutionary competition, both roading and reciting, was gone through. A fair numbqp-of membors competed for tho society’s certificates of merit.

Mr. do Lautour gave a vory able and instructive address, which was well appreciated by his hearers. In giving his decision he said ho found himself in a very’ difficult position, owing to tlio great dilforonco ill the selections of tho competitors. In the reading competition lie decided in favor of Mr. Drirton, and in the recitation ho allotted tlio certificate to Mrs. Woods.

At the close of tlie.evening Mr. C. A. do Lautour was elected an honorary member of tlie society. lie was accorded a hearty voto of thanks for venturing out in such boisterous weather.

A vote of thanks to tbo chair' man terminated the proceedings.
