ELEPHANTS’ TERRIBLE REVENGE.

The following exciting ejiisodo is translated from a native paper “Manbhum” for the “Amrita Bazar Putrira” (Calcutta), from which the extract is taken:—“ln Agraliayan last, a khera of the village Dalma, Pargana Baraliablium, having gone to his paddy field to inspect it, found a herd of elephants destroying the crop. ■Naturally he got enraged, and began to shoot arrows at -tho animale from behind a neighbouring tree, which, resulted in tho death of a young elephant. No sooner did he notice this than the khera ran away, and took sholter in his cottage near by. Maddened at the death of the young elephant, the animals made a furious dash at the cottage, and surrounded and razed it to the ground. The khera, however, somehow or other, escaped with his life, climbed up a peepul tree, and took shelter on its topmost bough. Failing in their attempt, tho animals roared in "anger, and made another dash with aggravated fury, towards tho tree and surrounded it. Their strength was increased by a fresh contingent which responded tp’ their roar. The revengeful elephants had flip sagacity to fetch water in their trunks from a neighbouring build, sprinkled around the foot of the tree so as to loosen its Jiold in tlip ground, and ultimately succeeded in uprooting It and avenging themselves in the blood of the unfortunate man,”
