Mr. H. E. Gibbons, for the past eight years manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Palmerston, lias been appointed resident inspector )t the bank at Wellington. The death is reported from Wellington, after a long illness, of William Cateland Alexander, a wellknov'n medico, aetat 52. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin announces the death of Dr. Edward William Alexander. He was born and educated at St. Helena, aild studied for his profession at King’s College, London, qualifying as M.It.C.S. in 1853. Dr. Alexander was Colonel-Surgeon at St. Helena for several years. After leaving St.

two years in England and on the Continent, and came to N.Z., settling in Dunedin. Amongst other distinctions he was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of England and a member of the Geographi-

cal Society of Italy. His son, Di E. 11. Alexander, is resident surgeo at Ashburton Hall.
