AUCKLAND PLAGUE SCARE.

A GENERAL CLEAN-UP.

Press Association

AUCKLAND, yesterday.

Dr. Purdy, Health Officer, in a report to the City Council, urged the need of a vigorous sanitary crusade and unlimited scavenging. He suggested that the health, recommendations made by the Council should be made compulsory, and offenders proceeded against legally. Dr Purdy said: ‘.‘The.population can nevor be really safe from visitations, especially of typhoid fever, until .the city drainage scheme becomes an accomplished fact and neighboring localities properly drained. The primitive methods in many places of drainage into the soil direct will remain a standing menace to the health of the city and suburbs, until public opinion is sufficiently aroused to compel all authorities to adopt modern drainage. The subject is of such vital importance that the whole area should bo placed under one governing body.”. He suggested , a meeting of all local Councils “be summoned to discuss the subject together with the Chief Health Officer, city' engineer, and others. j The Mayor said it was gratifying to know that after all the efforts of the Health Department and officials of the City Council, Auckland was once again clean. The City Council would prosecute vigorously persons whose premises were in an insanitary condition.

Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer of the colony, was present at the meeting, and the Mayor assured him that the Council would only be too pleased to co-operate with his department in anything he might suggest for the sanitary betterment of the city. A drainage conference would be called very soon. Dr. Mason would be afsked to attend. f The Council passed a series of resolutions authorising extensive alterations and repairs of premises in Queen street, also for the demolition of premises in Albert street, Center street, and Cook street, as being unfit for human occupancy.
