DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
COAIAIITTEE MEETING. The meeting of the above committee was held last night. Air. J. Somervell being in the chair. There was no quorum at last meeting.
The head-master’s report was to the effect that during the past live weeks the attendance had not been so good, owing to the rough weather and the prevalence of sickness. The average was 733, the full roll being 845. Three teachers were overburdened with large classes, and required assistance. The inspector, Air. Hill, at his last visit recommended the securing of hypoplato blackboards for the infant school —40 yards, 4ft wide, would be required. He also urged that application should be made -for a set of .natural history pictures for the infants, the present set being worn out. Air.. Gilchrist delivered two lectures to a packed roomful of children. The Governor will visit the school at 10 .'o’clock on Wednesday morning, the committee to make necessary arrangements. The two clocks presented by Mr. F. Parker have been placed in tlio school. . Aliss Ivy AlcConnell and Master A. Adair were presented with Mr. H. De Costa’s “popularity”, medal. The school closes at the end of the week. The architect for the Education Board recommended that the perforated metal coverings to the ventilators in the ceilings of the class-rooms of the brick school be removed, to allow freer egress to the vitiated air. The ventilation of the rooms is capable of improvement. Other details were enumerated. It was decided that the school he cleaned during the holidays, the secretary to arrange for assistance to the
cleaner. Tlio question of 'a destructor for waste paper was left to Air. Darton, who said he could probably secure an old tank from Air. Townley.
Mr. Darton reported that in conjunction with the headmaster and the architect he selected a site at the lower end of the grounds, and the Education Board approved of This site. The question of a subsidy would be decided later. Referring to the Queen’s, scholarship incident, Mr. Darton said they only applied to "Wellington, Taran-r aki, and Hawke’s Bay provincial districts. Gisborne was in tile Hawke’s Bay educational district, but in the Auckland provincial district. While at a recent meeting of the Education Board, he induced them to write to the Board.of Governors in Wellington to take the necessary steps to get the Act amended in that direction. Further efforts should be made to have this desirable' end brought about. Sir Robert Stout would be here shortly, and a small deputation should wait on him and ask lnm to use his influence in that direction. The matter should also be brought under the notice of the local Parliamentary representative, and advantage should he taken of the Governor’s visit on AVednesday. He moved that a committee be set up for that purpose. Mr. Blair seconded, and the motion was carried. Rev. Griffin proposed that tlio Rev. Grant and Messrs. Blair and Darton compose the personnel of the committee, with power to act. —Carried. The chairman said that he hoped ‘to sec as many of the committed ‘present at the visit of the Govern6r on Wednesday as possible. An account for £5 13s Gd was passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
