THE GAME UP THE COAST.

Our Tokomaru correspondent writes: —A mooting of tho local football club was hold on May 11th at To Puka Hotel. Tho secretary, Mr. Nowton, notified tho mooting that Messrs.. Hindmarsh, Oates, and AV. Busby had written him accepting tlie positions of Patron, President, and Vice-President respectively, and had each enclosed a guinea donation to the club’s funds.

A iottor from the Kaiti-City Club was also read, and members learnt with satisfaction that the Ivaiti team will visit us during the middle of tlie season, provided suitable arrangements can be made with the Union Coy. for a steamer. It was decided to make every effort to get the team hero, and the suggestion of the Kaiti Club that possibly the Union Coy. would run an excursion for the match was well received, and a hope was expressed that such a course would eventuate. As the Tokomaru team ■consists mainly of natives, a match here with a town team would cause groat excitement, and a big attendance of spectators could be depended on.

It ivas also decided to continue tlie matches Township v. Bushmen, and the latter team woro asked to got distinctive colors. Four games are to bo played, one every three weeks, the dates to lie fixed by the secretary and the Bushmen’s representative. The Chairman of the mooting, Mr. Sigloy, in proposing that none but financial members of tho club bo allowed to part'a ke in these practice matches, noted with satisfaction that the AVaiapu" Sub-Union had last season, oil the recommendation of tho Tokomaru Chili, adopted tho “110pay no-play” rule, and that this season tlie same rule had been adopted by tho Taranaki and Poverty Bay Rugby Unions. The resolution that the rule be extended to practice matches also was carried unanimously. The secretary stated that subscriptions were coming in rapidly. As there is a possibility of there being no East Coast Union this season, it was decided that in that event the Tokomaru Club affiliate with the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, so as to give it the status of an affiliated club.

THE PROFESSIONAL TEAM.

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. At a meeting of the committee of the Auckland Rugby Union, held last evening, tlie following resolution was passed:-—-“Tlio Auckland Rugby Union views with alarm and indignation the suggestion of a tour of a professional Rugby football team to England, and trusts the local football authorities will use every endeavor to discountenance such a tour as being inimical to the best interests of football in this colony.”

“Saxon,” writing to tlie St. James’s Gazette, London, on March 18, says:—A strange story has been current of lato anent the visit of a New Zealand team to re-establish that moribund body, tlie Northern Union. Possibly a few players at the end of tlieir career in tlie colony have conceived this plan with a view to improving tlieir own fortunes, but they know not the Northern Union, nor its ways and means. Not for a moment would any such tour be countenanced by the New Zealand authorities, who have always stood firm for the principles of amateurism at homo and abroad.
