Press Association.—Copyright. BRIDGETOWN, May 14. " The steamer Thorthill, bound from New York to Brazil, took fire and foundered in mid-ocean. The crew of 29 took four boats and -sailed 870 miles, landing at Barbiuloos on the eighth day.

Press Associatioa. CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. Anstoy’s boat slieds, on the river Avon were burned yesterday. The buildings, though 'not completely destroyed, were left in ruins. A considerable number of boats were destroyed. The lire occurred in the upper story, where a stove had been used for bending timber for boat building. The sheds were insured for .£6OO in the Liverpool office. HASTINGS, yesterday. The fire was the most disastrous since 1893, when the same block.and the block on the opposite side of the street were destroyed. The lire commenced at 9 o’clock, and was got' under at midnight. The Bank of New South Wales was in grave danger, but the brigade confined the fire to Ihe Cafe building. J. W. Gower owned the Cafe, which was a 1 so occupied by Leigh, chemist, and it was insured for £IOOO in the State fire insurance office. Leigh held a risk of £350 in the London Liverpool and Globe. The Bank of New Zealand was insured for £BBS in the New Zealand office. The other, insurances are not yet ascertainable. All the buildings were of wood, and will be rebuilt in brick. S. Bone, of the Imperial Cafe, was insured for £IOO in the Phoenix. Ho estimates his loss at £6OO. Faulkner, dentist, had £3OO over his stock in the Liverpool, London and Globe. Halsa, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, had an insurance of £2OO in the North British. The furniture of Paterson, Mossman and Company, valued at £SO, was uninsured. Williams and Kettle, "who- owned the building occupied ' by Maddison, Faulkner, and Paterson and Mossman, were insured for £2600 in the Liverpool, London and Globe, and had an insurance of £4200 on their stock in the National, and £ISOO in the Liverpool, London and Globe. Maddison and Co.’s stock was insured for £3OOO in the Atlas. Their loss is estimated at between two and three thousand pounds. The total insurances amounted to £14,435, and the loss is estimated at over £20,000.
