A party recently came into Masterton from the country, in the timehonoured trap, to hear the celebrated band. When they reached the Show Ground they inquired whether it was the Masterton Band that was playing, as they had come to hear the Besses o’ tli’ Barn, and did not care for men players. They thought it was worth while coming in to hear lasses play.—Wairarapa Times.
The Ayrshire, leaving for England about the end of the month, will take a shipment of 20.000 superficial feet of New Zealand white nine from the West Coast of the South Island. This is the first consignment of a purchase of 120,000 feet which has beon made by Mr. Duncan Stelfox on behalf of his company, which has its headquarters at Manchester. Hitherto this timber has not reached the English market in any appreciable quantities, but the company hopes that by thoroughly seasoning the wood before shipping it they may ho .abio to overcome the difficulties of carrying it in good condition. When once this is demonstrated the firm hopes to inaugurate a very large business in exporting white pine to England, where it is ill great request for packing purposes.
