AVELLINGTON TRAAI FATALITY. AVELLINGTON, Saturday. The inquest on the Brooklyn tramway accident was resumed to-day. The jurors were taken a trip on a car similar to that which met with the accident, and the working of the Tfrakes was explained. Alalior, a motorola n, stated an experience on the Brooklyn line. He had forgotten to put the lever over before using the magnetic brake, and the car got away for a short distance, but lie saw the oversight, and quickly remedied it. Richardson, tramwav engineer, said that from the first his impression was that the motor-man had overlooked the reversimr lover before using the magnetic brake. All the tests carried out pointed in this direction. He thought the error was due to the motorman speaking to the motorman on the up-car. The system of brakes used was a standard throughout the world.
The jury on the Brooklyn tramawv accident gave a verdict that Airs. Bell’s death was caused hv the overturning of a tram ear;.that the ear track and equipment were in good order: that the runaway was accidental, hut there was not sufficient evidence to warrant a decision as to the cause of the same. Riders were added affirming the necessity of further inquiry by experts as to whether the bogie cars fitted with magnetic traction brakes should be used on such steep inclines as Brooklyn; that no one hut first-class motormen should be allowed to drive on such ttjeep grades; that the attention of the City Council be called to the effect of the reversing lever of the controller being placed in the wrong position through the runaway causing the magnetic brake to become inoperative; that attention ho called to the system of signalling, so as to eliminate overrunning sections; that proper jacks he carried with each car.
