Following tlio example of Australian cities, and also that of tile New Zealand exhibition and of Auckland, a is to be formed in .Wellington. A company with a capital of £25,000 has been floated to change the faco of the Miramar Park to make it an attractive pleasure resort. The bankruptcy returns for the three months ended 31st March, 1907, show an increase in the amount of business in Wellington district, including Wanganui, Palmerston North, Danuevirke, Paliiatua, Napier, Masterton, Blenheim, Nelson, Westport, Grcymouth, and Hokitika, There were 27 bankruptcies in this area during the quarter mentioned, and the assets realised amounted to £5163 15s Id, as compared with 21 bankruptcies and £2-118 worth of assets during the corresponding period of 1900. In Wellington City district there wore 13 bankruptcies this yoar, while the assets realised amounted to £1194, as compared with one bankruptcy and £782 worth of assets for the quarter ended March, 1906, The Auckland Amateur Bowing Association has made formal application for the New Zealand Amateur Bowing Championship meeting to be held in the northern port next season. Wanganui is also making a strong bid for the championship meeting, but the question will not lie settled one way or the other until the annual meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Bowing Association in October next. Auckland has not had the championships decided under its auspices for some ten years, and that fact may influence delegates to decide to give the preference to the northern association. On the other land, Wanganui is admirably suited for regattas, and being in a more central position to the southern ports of the colony, .the voting power on its side is bound to be substantial. Following is a circular sent to .officers of the Lands and Survey Departments: “I am directed by the Hon. the Minister of Lands to call voa.r attention to the fact that it is highly inexpedient that Government officers employed by the Land and Survey Department should be allowi ed to select sections of Crown lands i which are open for public selection, i The same disability applies to the wives of Government officers as to officers themselves. It is-understood that in some districts officers of the. Lands and Survey Department, nr of the Bonds Department, have been allowed tci acquire sections either by original application or by way of transfer. As a matter of fact it is considered that no Civil servant employed in any of tlio Government Departments should he an applicant for Crown lands either by way of original selection or by transfer, so long as such persons hold a position in the Civil Service,”
