A TRADE RIVAL
Ffosa Association. WELLINGTON, yesterday. Mr. E. Hay don, of Canterbury, who resided formerly in Canterbury, and latterly lias boon settled in the Argontino, is on a visit to the colony. Ho speaks in high terms of the strides mndo in developing tho country, especially in tho endeavor to improve tho Hocks. In tho last six months of 1900 no loss than 0700 stud sheep, besides horses, cattle, and pigs, wore imported. Sixtoon companies run railways, some of them owning over 11000 miles each. Thoir sheep trucks are convertible into cattle trucks at will, and are loaded at tho ends, and not at tho sides, which ho considers an improvement on our methods. Itoferring to tlio Argentine country, his appreciation of its advantages was tempered by a' very decisive statement: “Tho Argontino is a capitalists’ country,” ho said. “Tlioro is vory little uso a man going thoro unless ho has at least £SOOO. Labor is cheap, living is dear, and taxes are low.”- Discussing tho frozen meat trade, Mr. Haydon said: “Tho Argontino still goes for Lincoln sheep instead of tho smallor and more compact carcase, and it is questionable whether alfalfa can produco that fine flavor which tho natural and acclimatised grasses of Now Zealand do.” Ho had littlo doubt that tho Argontino in a few yoars will bo able to fill the market so far as quantity is concerned, but she will never hurt New Zealand as regards quality, and as a natural consequence New Zealand will © a ways able to hold her own in tho matter of prices-
