COLONIAL PREMIERS IN LONDON.
.Press Association. —Copyrig lit. LONDON, May 9. King Edward gave a dinner to the Premiers at Buckingham Palace. There were present the Prince of Wales, the Dukes of Connaught, Fife, Argyll, British Ministers and exMinistcrs, Mr. Bent, Sir W Lyne, Lord Milner, the High Commissioners j and Agents-General. King Edward, during the banquet, ■spoke as follows:—“I cannot leave tliis room without raising my glass to wish prosperity and happiness to tiie guests representing my oversea dr.minions. I give hearty welcome to the distinguished statesmen here to-night, and trust they will carry away an agreeable impression of the Motherland. I wish them God-speed on their voyage home.” The band of the Irish guards piayel selections. The Lord Mayor of Manchester presented Mr. Deakin, Sir WiiLiJ Laurier and D. Jameson with fbt Freedom of the City at the Hotel Cecil. He emphasised it was a personal tribute and mark of affectionate regard and brotherly feeling for the colonies, with whom they wished, to foster a common sentiment of Empire. Mr. Dea'kin acknowledged the honor. He regretted his inability to go to Manchester, where lie would have Heen brought into closer touch with the most interesting developments of ,ut ' al ® c mm®t, and so become acquainted with a great industrial community. Dr. Jameson said lie would like to see Manchester, which enjoyed a practical monopoly of the cotton trade in South Africa.
