The barque Northern Chief, which left Newcastle on' the 13tli for Auckland, put into Sydney to-night in distress. A heavy gale was experienced off the coast. Seas swept the reck and flooded the cabin. The captain and mate were below at the time ami had an exciting experience in getting free of wreckage. The vessel sustained other damage, and the captain decided to put into Sydney for overhaul.

The Northern Chief’s cabin was destroyed and the navigating appliances demolished. The rads -re destroyed. Owing to the , u tit’/ of water which reached the hold it was necessary to resort to lumping for a time. The second officer Majilowor, had a narrow escape. During I the gale he was washed overboaid, hut was rescued. ADELAIDE, May 8. At the Maritime Board onquiiy into the accident to the steamer Port Chalmers, the captain stated he did not think the provision made to guard against vessels colliding with the wrecks was sufficient. The Board cautioned the master of the Port Chalmers to he more careful future. The steamer has been tomI porarily repaired. 1 BRISBANE, May 8. The German steamer Bielefeld, roI cently on fire, has sailed for Sydney, where repairs will he effected.
