MATAWHERO STOCK SALES.
Tho last weekly stock sale of the season was hold i at Matawhoro yesterday, in very disagreeable weather, which was tho cause of the non-ap-pearance of a line of 1000 wotliois from Waimnta. Messrs Common, Shelton and Co. and Dulgoty and Co.’s yarding consisted of about 1500 sheep and a lew jaattlo and pigs. The bidding tor sheep was not very brisk, only ono lot of lambs being sold under the hammer, but most of the passed lots were sold after the sale. The following prices wore obtained : —Sheep : 653 wethers I4s, 250 souiul-mouthed ewes 11s, 187 lambs 9s Gd, 117 woolly lambs 9s 3d, 55 fat owes’ IJs Gd. Pigs: Two porkers were offered and brought 20s oacli. Cattle: A small yarding of cattle came forward; one steer and ono boiler selling at 36s each.
Messrs Williams and Kettle and the Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company report as follows: — Sheep: About 6000 sheep came forward. Tho sale went woll trom the commencement and most of the yarding was cleared under the hammer. Bidding was brisk at times, especially for good classes of sheep, consequently fair prices were obtained. Serviceable linos of ewes were in good demand, and brought 13s 4/1 lor 2tootlis to 17s Id for 4 and 0-tootlis. Interior quality sold at from 5s to 9s Gd. Buyers for wethers were numerous, and the prices lor this class ranged from 14s Gd for 2-tooths to 15s 4d for fat and forward 4-tootlis. Lambs also sold well, although the wet weather prevented them looking in good nick. Small ones brought 6s 9d and medium 9s «Ll. Prices were as follows: —-Thirty fat and forward ewes 11s 6d, G. Macdonald; 49 4-toot-li wethers 15s, J. Hunt; 3S prime fat owes 13s 7d, J. Maynard ; 58 owes 9s 6d, llubgood ; 134 fat and forward wethers 14s lOd, J. Clark; 105 4-tooth Romney owes 14s, J. Walker; 65 wether lambs 9s Id, F;. Renner; 67 lambs 6s 9d, J. M.Gouldsmitli; 57 fat and forward owes 11s 6d, Gibbs; 48 2-tootli 13s 4d, Sherratfc; 501 4 and 6-tooth ewes 17s Id, Derry and Son ; 400 lambs 9s, E.Renner ; 187 2-tooth wethors 13s Gd, J. Clark; 217 4-tooth wotliors los, T. Hay; 172 6-tooth ewes 14s Gd, Slierratt; 492 wotliors 15s Id, C. J. Parker; 788 owes 13s 9d, Dorry and Son; 740 5-year-old owes in lamb 14s Iff, Fitzgerald and Derry and Son : 414 wethers 14s 4d, J. Claris; 12 hoggets 4s, Russell; 28 good hoggets Us Id, J. Hunt. Cattle: Over 400 head of cattle wore yarded. Tho sale was better than last week, although tho market was still dragging. Most of the young stock was sold, and there was better demand for beef. Following wore the prices: 47 woaners (mixed sexes) £1 Gs, Barron; 51 18-montli steers £2 14s, McSavcny; 46 yearling steers £1 12s, Judd Bros; 28 heifers £2 10s, W. J. Trafford; 8 steers and 7 heifers £2, G. Witters; 7 beef bullocks £7 2s 6d, Common, Shelton and Co.; 6 prime beef bullocks £7 10s, same buyers; 7 light beef bullocks £4 12s 6d, W. Jobson ; 13 beef bullocks £7, Common, Shelton and Co: 48 heifer weaners £1 7s- Gd, Campbell; 3 steers £3 ss, Judd Bros; 1 cow and calf £3, 11. Moore; 22 cows £2 7s 6d, Witters; 12 young steers £2 Is, McSavcny ; 10 steers £3 8s Gd, Judd Bros; 3 young steers £2 3s 6d, McSavcny; 3 cows £2 10s,Trafford ;11 weaners 19s, McSaveny; 6 bullocks £4 10s, J. Walker; 4 do. £4, same buyer; 9 steers, 1 heifer £2, McSaveny. Pigs: Only a few were entered, but there was little or no demand. One small pig sold at- 11s.

The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from tho High Commissioner. dateed London, Wednesday:— The wool sales have commenced. There is a large number of buyers aiid active competition. Prices for merinos and fino crossbreds of all grades are firm and prices for medium and coarse crossbreds arc slightly lower.

GOLD AND SILVER EXPORT WELLINGTON, yesterday.
Since the beginning of the present year New Zealand has exported 144,088 ounces of gold, valued at £576,027. The export of gold last month was 25,969 ounces, valued at £102,555, as compared with 44,592 ounces, valued at £179,954 in April last year. The quantity of silver exported last month was 91,272 ounces, valued at £9317. TRADE OF THE COLONY. WELLINGTON, last night. Returns of the quantity and value of exports from New Zealand during the financial year ended on 31st March, published in the Gazette. TTie exports of coal, gold, silver and minerals are shown to have aggregated £2,534,855, as compared with £2,379,104 in the vear before. Fisho'lwiv only £lo,B79,_lvJ<ito-u—e-t-r--ked falling off is noticeable under (lie heading of “fungus, kauri gum’ and timber,” the values for 1907 being £831,163 as compared with £880,431 for the preceding twelve months. Under “frozen meats, wool, fallow, butter, cheese, hides live stock, haeon and hams, etc.,” tho year recently closed made a marked improvement, the figures being £14,548,171 for 1907 and £11,495,523 tor 1900. A falling off is shown in regard to the value of the agricultural produce exported, this venr having only £242,837 to its credit as compared with £43.3,960 for the year preceding. The -principal falling ofF is in wheat. Manufactures, leather, phormium, woollens, etc., total £1,164,932; and “miscellaneous” values are shown at£35.794.
