RE-NAMING POVERTY BAY.
To the Editor of tlio Times; Sir, —1 am thoroughly at a loss to understand why the powers ill this district seem to have such a disregard for the perpetuation of the name of such a great navigator and benefactor to science and advancement as Captain Cook. As far as I know Poverty Bay and the Bay of Plenty’ do more in New Zealand to perpetuate his name than any other portion of the colnoy. Why was this place called so? Because the captain found the natives hostile and he could not get tho supplies he wanted, while in tlie case of the Bay of Plenty he was favorably received, and procured there what he could not here. The names were undoubtedly appropriate and sliold be retained. What reasons are you going to give in the event of changing the name? I consider it preposterous on the part of the originators, and sincerely hope the public will take the matter in hand firmly, and retain the name given by one of the greatest navigators the world has seen.—l am, etc., MARCUS JONES. [The reasons have already been given, and if our correspondent does not think they are sufficient ones he will of course cast his vote for Pl vertty Bay, while those who stliiuk otherwise will select another name and vote for it. Strangers coming into the colony, ’and probably halt the people in it, arc not aware of tho reasons why. it was called Poverty Bay and read the name as a correct description of the place. That in itself is a sufficient reason for altering it.—Ed. C.T.]
