POLICE COURT.
(Before Messrs. C. Lewis and V. Pyke, J’s.P.) CHARGE OF ASSAULT. At the Police Court yesterday morning, Philip Brighting, a youth of about 18 years of age, was charged with assaulting a little girl aged nine.
Detective Afaddern stated that at half-past eight yesterday morning, as the girl was being sent for some milk, the accused caught hold of her, carried her ovor a fence near the railway station, held his hand over her mouth, and threatened to strike her if she screamed, but she did scream and accused ran away. Two men who happened to bo passing, chased him, with the result that the arrest’ was effected.
Tho detective suggested that tho accused be remanded till this morning for medical examination.
When arrested, Brighting was calm and quiet, but when ill tho Courthouse, lie acted in an eccentric manner, trying to catch his own shadow, etc.
The remand was granted. The accused is understood to have come from Wanganui lately. Ho was in Gisborne a bunt 8 years ago. DRUNKENNESS. A seeon doffender for drunkenness was fined 10s, 2s costs', or in default 24 hours’ imprisonment.
