Mr. Wellsted has received word from Wellington that Mr. F. H. Day, Gisborne’s now stationmaster, will not arrive until next Wednosddav. Mr. IV©listed leaves for England on Saturday, after forty years’ service in various Government Departments.
Captain Edward Lascelles, of the Third Dragoon Guards, who has been appointed instructor for mounted infantry in New Zealand,is still attached to his regiment, which is about to proceed to India. He is at present in attendance on tlie Defence Minis-
ter (Sir Joseph Ward) in England, and will probably come out to New Zealand about tlie time of Sir Joseph’s return. The Hon. Mr. Millar loft Auckland for Tauranga on Monday evening, where he will investigate the trawling limits and other matters, and ho will proceed to Rotorua on Wednesday. On Thursday he visits Waihi, where he delivers an address in the evening, another address being given at ICarangaliake the following night. On Saturday ho returns to Auckland. On Monday lie leaves for Whangarei, returning to Auckland on ‘Wednesday.
A cablegram from London records the death of Sir Penrose Julyan, at one time Crown Agent for the Colonies.
A Press Association telegram from Wanganui last night states that tho Borough Council, at its meeting last night, appointed Mr. Charles Cowdery, C.E., of Chrislichurcli, to bo tramways construction engineer.
A Press Association message from Auckland states that cable advice has been received of tho death of Mr. E. B. Heriot (formerly headmaster of tho Remuora public school) at Hobart yesterday. Deceased retired from the lioadmastership of the Remucra school under the- teachers’ superannuation scheme about twelve months ago. He took a leading part in the Education InsL.iAit'e and Anglican Church work. A Press Association telegram from
Auckland states that tlie Very Rev. Father Gillan, Vicar-General of the Auckland Roman Catholic diocese, met with a trap accident yesterday. He was driving round a corner in Upper Queen street when he was thrown out of tho trap and fell on his head. When picked up lie was unconscious. He sustained very severe wounds on the forehead and scalp with linear fracture of the
skull. Iu addition, his face and lips were badly cut. He was taken to a private hospital: Dr. Porter, who attended him, docs not think the accident will lead to anything of a serious, nature.
