* A small hoy called at the Police Station in tears last night, and aftci some hesitation the facts were elicited from him that’ his father had beaten him and told him to “clear, out.” He feared to return as another “hiding’' was anticipated, and wanted the company of a policeman home. A youth was arrested yesterday on charges of breaking and entering Fisher’s confectionery shop on Sunday night and Hastio’s saddlery establishment on Saturday, 20th inst. From the latter shop, it is stated, leggings, spurs, hoot laces, a whip cord, etc., were abstracted, but from the former nothing was taken.

The following nominations for seats on the Pouawn Road Board have been received by the returning officer, Mr. D. Morice: AY. 11. Barker; Tlios. Fraser, Tlios. Holden, W. G. Mac laurin. As five members are required tho four gentlemen nominated have been declared elected, and an election of one member will be hold at the office of the Board on May 15th. Two men. who were concerned in an assault, tho result of a dog fight, last week, will he charged this morning with assaulting with intent to rob two men, at the cormtt of Childers road and Read’s Quay last night. The two victims are cut about and one seems to have been kicked on the side of his head. The arrest was effected by Constables Wales and Irwin. The two accused will he formally charged this morning and remanded until the return of the Magistrate, Mr. AY. A. Barton. At a meeting of tlio Freezing Workers’ Union held in ToWiiley’s Hall last night the resignation of the President’ (Mr. Petersen) was received. Nominations were invited for the office and tho election was postponed -until the monthly meeting. Consideration of a suggestion from the Wellington slaughtermen that a federation of slaughtermen throughout tho colony should be formed was held over till the same meeting.

At the Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr. .J . Townley, .1 J’. two first offenders for drunkenness were fined ss, 2s costs, or 21 hours’ imprisonment. Another was convicted on a charge of insobriety, mid was remanded till next Monday for refusing to quit licensed premises when requested, bail of £2 being allowed. A fourth first offender, who did not appear, was fined the amount of his bail. £l. A young man. a second offender, was lined ,10s, 2s costs, or in default.2l hours’ imprisonment.

On the Makauri range on Thursday and Saturday last members of the Hast Coast Mounted Rifles fired the first round for Mr. Hutchinson’s cup, the ranges being 200yds, 500yds, and 600yds, seven shots at each range. Following were the scores:—Trooper Beat-son 91, Capt. Tom Meson 85, Lieut. Hamilton 81, Sergt. Zachariah 80, Lieut Evans 78, Sergt-Ma.jor Morrison 76, Sergt. l’oynter 75, Sergt. Fairlie 68, G'orp. At the annual meeting of householders at Wairoa, at which thirteen persons were present, the Chairman said the question of joining with Poverty Bay in the formation of a separate education district bad been mooted before. Napier was a better centre, lie thought, for them, and they were better off as they were. Mr. T. Browne concurred. Air. T Lambert moved that this meeting is opposed to joining in with the formation of a separate education district, believing Wairoa’s interests are more identified with Napier than Gisborne. Seconded by Mr. W. Smith and carried.

The annual meeting of the East Coast Mounted Rifles was held on Saturday evening. Tlie balance-sheet showed that the dorps earned £203 for capitation during t|ie year, and £l6 for daylight parades. Nipe new members were elected. The election of officers resulted : General committee, Sergts. Zuchariali, Fail-lie. ’ Wit ters, Oates, and Corps. Kinder and Cole; filing committee, Sergts. Zachariah, Fairlie, Corps. Kinder, Cole, Trooper Bentson, and Lieut. Evans; secretary. Lieut. Hamilton (re-elect-ed) ; auditors. Corps. O’Meara and Kinder. The general committee was deputed to make arrangements for the annual ball of the corps.

There was a fair attendance of members of the Gisborne Debating Society at the meeting last night, including a larger sprinkling of ladies than usual. Eight now members were proposed, bringing the total membership up to 80. The debate, in which the Rev. F. W. Chatterton took the affirmative, and Mr. E. H. Mann the negative, te r “^rTuencethan environment.”’ Both gentlemen treated the subject .with considerable ability, find the question was freely discussed by members. At the conclusion of tlie debate tbo voting went in favor of Mr. Mann’s side by one vote. Messrs. Rowley and Darton have been chosen to lead off in the debate next Monday on the question, “Should capital punishment be abolished.”
