A branch of the, lnternational Ar_ bitration and Peace Association was quietly formed in 'Wellington recently. Mr. .T. G. W. Aitken. AI M .It.. was aj)ointed president. The object of the Asoeiation is to promote international disarmament. The meeting declined to receive a resolution urging “the maintenance of Britain’s naval and military power to enable her to fulfil her glorious destiny and be chief of the nations and a blessing to the world.” A Shannon lad employed at Itikioraugi recently picked up near To Horn a purse containing nearly £7 (says the M ana wain Standard). Learning that the owner resided in Paekakariki. the lad hiked there and roturned the purse to the owner, who wishing to encourage and reward honesty in a lad who had ridden over 10 miles (same distance home again) to restore the lost money, offered the lad —sixpence. The lad promptly refused to accept any reward for his services. The owner of the purse must be a- philanthropist in disguise—very much in disguise. “What has been the effect of the Bush and Swamp Lands' Act in this district.” a prominent Taranaki settler was asked the other day. “It has enabled a fair amount of land to be taken up under easy conditions,” was the reply; “but in my opinion the Act is too liberal. The greatest flaw is that no rate can be levied for loading for several years, and as a result the holders of the land who use the main roads pay nothing towards them. In my opinion, many of the men who now have little or no access to their sections would prefer to contribute something towards the cost of roading. Mr. M. M. Maloney, a member of the mechanical staff at the Christchurch telegraph office, is about to patent an improved telephone transmitter. The transmitter is fitted with an extra diaphragm with carbon pencils radiating from the centre and making contact at the sides. This increases the volume of sound and does not allow the granules to pack. The patent is attached by means of a screw and the transmitter can be so adjusted that- a person’s breathing may be heard quite distinctly. It is raid to be specially suited for long distance telephoning, and it is claimed that a person can be heard as audibly at one hundred miles as at a mile. Mr. Maloney lias been in communication with the Commonwealth on the matter, and has received a request from the Postmaster General to submit. samples of his patent.
