Tlio Besses o’ tli’ : Barn Band are to appear in Gisborne next Wednesday evening for three nights, with special afternoon concerts,* and briefly they arc a combination of weavers whose skilled playing has won for

pious of the World.” As far back as 1821 the Besses were awarded their first prize in competition during the coronation ceremonies of George IV. This stands as the introduction to a brilliant list of victories. In June, 1837, at the coronation of the late Queen Victoria, the Besses o’ th’ Barn competed for the coronation prize and won it. In 20 years tlie Besses have competed in 190 contests, winning 131 first prizes, 24 second prizes, and 18 third prizes. During 1892 they won every challenge cup
in Great Britain. The crowning victory -occurred in 1903,- when at tlie Crystal -Palace festival the £2500 national scholarship trophy against 201 bands. During last yCar the Besses, by command, played before His Majesty the King, awl also made a triumphant tour of France, where Mr. Owen (conductor), and Mr lies (manager) were decorated personally by President Loubet, as was tlie case" when they played before King Edward. This remarkable record of successful achievements is unique in the history of Great Biitain. Since the band lias landed in New Zealand they have been welcomed everywhere with the greatest enthusiasm.
