MAYOR’S SUNDAY.
At Holy Trinity Church yesterday morning an old-time English custom was revived in the celebration of Mayor’s Sunday, by a special municipal thanksgiving service and a church parade. The three defence corps and three companies of school cadets, under Captain Bcere,-assembled at the drill shed and paraded to the church in sections of fours. The procession was headed by the City Band, followed by the Gisborne Rifles, Defence Cadets, and School Cadets. Then followed the Mayor and. Councillors in landaus, escorted by the East Coast Mounted Rifles. Arriving at the Church the infantry and cadet corps lined up on either side of the entrance, and the Mayor and Councillors, escorted by the band and the East Coast Mounted Rifles, passed into the church to the places accorded them. The foot corps followed, coming up opposite aisles to their respective positions.
The main body of the church was well filled with the men, fully 160 being present. Tile, service, which was bright and hearty, was conducted by the Rev. H. N. Wright, Chaplain of the Gisborne Rifles, who gave an address on the words, “Lord, Show us the Father,” pointing out that men must bring their belief in the Fatherland of God not only into their religion, but also into their citizenship. After the service, the city fathers were escorted to the Municipal Chambers where the different corps were dismissed.
