THE GISBORNE CONTEST

Gisborne wore an animated appearance during the polling for the municipal elections. Tho day was tine, and tho stream of voters that ivonded its way to His Majesty’s Theatre testified to the interest the ratepayers wore taking in tho matter. Early in he afternoon Custom House street presented a lively appearance, fully x hundred voters waiting in tho vicinity of tho Theatre for an opportunity to record their votes. Carriages, buggies, and vehicles of every description were engaged in conveying voters to and from the booths. There was a steady stream of voters at the West End booth, in Mr. A’eal’s shop. The Borough Council elections today created a greater amount of interest than on any former occasion, and the poll was a heavy one. For the Mayoral co’netst Mr. J. Vigor Brown was returned by a majority of 285 over Mr. S. Cornell, the present Mavor. A large crowd of people waited about until 10.55 when the result of the Mayoral election was announced, the result being received with great cheering. CARTERTON, last night. Richardson (present Alayor) defeated Air. Jas. Scott for the AVnvoraltv of AA’oolston by 263 to 116 and Air. Geo. Aliteholl defeated Mr. C. A. Lees (present Mayor) by 338 to 69 for tho ALivo rn lty of Sunnier. The candidates nominated by the recent!- formed Sumner Burgess’ Association were all elected as Councillors for that Borough.
