VICE-REGAL TOUR IN THE SOUTH.
OUEENSTOAVN, last night. On Monday His Excellency the Governor was taken to the head of Lake AVnkatipu, being accompanied by Air. W. Fraser, M.HJI., and Borough Councillors. To-day he visited the public school and the Dominican Convent School, and in the evening he was entertained at a conversazione and concert. To-mor-row His Excellency proceeds to Lumsden.
HAWKE’S BAY A. AND P. SHOAY NAPIER, last night. The Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society held their annual autumn show at Hastings to-day. There was a good attendance, though not quite so largo «is last year. The exhibits, however, both in numbers and quality, were better than in former years. The following are the awards in the factory butter classes: Factory made butter suitable for export—Neils Nikolaison. Ormondville (931 points) . 1; Norsewood Cooperative Dairy Company (93 points). 2; Rangitikei Co-operative Dairy Company (921 points), 3; Cheltenham Co-operative Dairy Company (92 points), h.c. Eight entries. Factory made powdered butter—Rangitikei Co-operative Dairy Company (921 points),l; Cheltenham Co-opera-tive Dairy Company (92 points), 2; Heretaunga Co-operative Dairy Company (911 points), 3. Six entries. The ladies’ leaping match and the maiden leaping match were both won by Ben Abaicroft’s Scattercasli.
UP-TO-DATE DRAINAGE. TIMARU, last night.
A poll of the ratepayers to-dav on a proposal to raise a loan of £50.000 for underground drainage was carried by 628 votes to 256. The number on the roll was 1741.
TONGAN NEWS. _ - A.UCKEAND, last night. Advices from Tonga state that a violent thunderstorm occurred at Nukualofa on April 16th. The lowlying portions of the town were converted into lakes. The Government gauge registered 17.22 inches of rain. The wet weather has interfered greatly with the copra industry. A severe shock of earthquake of the three-barrelled variety occurred at Nukualofa on April 7th. but nc damage was done to dwellings, Lavinia Veigo, a noted Tongan chieftainess, died on April 7th, aged over 80.
FIRE BRIGADES ACT; NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. A poll was held to-day* on the proposal to bring the Fire Brigades Act into operation in New Plymouth. The proposal was carried on a very small poll by 105 for and lo against. MASTERTON, last night. A poll was held to-day on a proposal to bring the Fire Brigades Act into operation in Masterton. The proposal was carried by 582 votes to 95.
STEAMER AGROUND. . WELLINGTON, last night. . The steamer Inveran, from New York via Auckland, dragged her anchor in the stream late to-night, and is now aground off Oriental Bay. Tugs have gone to her assistance. A strong northerly gale is blowing.
