GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The final moeting of the above committee was bold last evening, but owing to some of tho members of the committee being out of the district, there was no quorum present, Messrs Somervell, AA’ildisli and Darton being the only/ members to put in an appearance.

The floral fete committee submitted their report, showing a credit balance of £7 19s 6d, which, after allowing £2 14s 6d for prizes, leaves £5 5s to bo handed over to the committee for improving the school grounds.—A vote of thanks was passed to those who assisted.

The annual report to bo submitted to the householders’ meeting was read and approved. The headmaster forwarded his monthly report as follows: —“Since your last meeting the average percentage of attendance has been 86.8. The present roll is 839. Miss King has been absent a fortnight owing to the illness and resulting death of her mother. Miss Craighead lias been - filling her place temporarily during pant of the time. I expect Misfi King will .resume her work on Monday. The Inspectors, Messrs Hill and Smith, have been paying their annual inspection visit to the school during the past week. On Thursday afternoon the distribution of attendance medals and certificates was held. Mr Somervell, who presided, presented the prizes. The prizes won by the children in the secondary .department were also presented by Mr Morgan, at the invitation of the chairman. The Rev. Mr Grant and Mr Darton also addressed the children. Mr. Finch, the architect of the Board of Education, inspected the school and furniture recently. He strongly recommended 11 1 a be removed, as they seriously obstucted the egress of the air. As the ventilation of the rooms has not proved entirely satisfactory, I wish to urge that his recommendation be acted upon. Mr. Inspector Hill lias recommended me to apply to the Board of Education for liyloplate blackboards, to be fixed to the walls of the infant school class rooms for the purpose of enabling the children to do blackboard work. I therefore ask you to bo good enough to make application as recommended.
