MANGAPAPA SCHOOL.
Tho following is tho annua! report of tho Mangapapa District School Committee for tho year omling 30th March, 1907: “Tho committee, in placing their report of the year’s work before the householders, have much pleasure in stating that the school still maintains a high state of ellioioney. It has long been recognised that owing to the overcrowding in the infant classroom, an addition to tho school buildings is absolutely necessary. The number of scholars on the roll is steadily increasing, and there is no spare room in tho head toacher’s division. Ropeated applications have been made by the Education Hoard from time to time to the Education Department for a grant to make tho required enlargement, hut up to the present time tho Department has not been convinced of its urgent necessity. Empire Day was duly observed as required by tho Education Department. Special lessons were given by the teachers, and addresses were kindly given to the children by Rev. F. IV. Ghatterton, Mr. W. L. Rees, and Colonel Porter, on empire building, from the ecclesiastical, statesman’s and military point of view respectively. A concert for the scholars’ prize fund was organised by the headmaster (Mr. W. J. Hunter), and held in His Majesty’s Theatre on 19th December. The annual distribution of prizes was made bv Mr. M. McLeod (in tho unavoidable absence of the Hon. W. H. Tucker) on 20th December. At tho beginning of January the committee were notified of the resignation of the headmaster, Mr. W. J. Hunter. On the suggestion of tho committee tho Education Board appointed Miss Morgan to take charge ■temporarily of the school, and Miss Brown to bo relieving assistant. In ■due course the Education Board forwarded six names to the committeo for their consideration for the vacant headmastership, but the eomnjjttec not being satisfied with the order of selection, declined to take tho responsibility of recommending either of them. Notification has been received from the Board that Mr. R. Cole, who is at present in charge of the Ma'k'auri school, has been appointed as headmaster of the Mangapapa school from Ist June. A detachment of the school cadets joined with those from other schools in the district and paid a visit to the Exhibition in Christchurch, and in order that the average attendance of the school might not be interfered with, the school was closed for eight days during their absence, tho Education Board having sanctioned that course. All the books, accounts, and balancesheet of the committee have been submitted to and duly certified as correct by the officials of tho Education Board.
