HOCKEY.

A general meeting of hockey playors was hold at tlie Royal Hotel last night, Mr. Bushnell presiding. I The chairman stated that the moot-o ing had boon called to consider the question of forming separate olubs in preference to the present district division of players. It was held that at present there was not enough competition among hockey players. What tho mooting could do was to appoint gentlemen to canvass for members ior clubs. He understood that clubs would bo formed as follows: Common, Shelton and Co., Trinity, To Rau,lCia Kaha, and City. Nothing could be done until they had lists of certain players, and they did not want any club to be formed and pulled out before tho competition finished. They would noed more grounds, but could do nothing as to procuring them until the names of certain players were handed in. It was suggested that tho present district teams should be 'kept on and permission procured lor Common, Shelton and Co. or Trinity to make an extra team. Mr Martin said four teams would be best. Four good teams would be quite sufficient, and perhape that would bo all that could bo got. Last season several teams turned out

short. The chairman said he thought the town should be able to turn out five

teams. The chairman read a letter from Mr Pavitt, President of the Association, who said he favored the proposed change, but suggested that under the new rule the number of members of the clubs should be limited. 1 Mr. Martin proposed that four or more clubs be formed. A doubt was expressed that a team could bo raised from Common, Shelton’s. Tho chairman said that it would be advisable to do away with both this team and tho Trinity team, and let the members of them join other clubs. The gentlemen appointed that evening should get the names of 15 certain players, and submit them to another- meeting. It was further proposed that the districts remain at present, and that special provision be made for the coming in of further outside teams, such teams to belong to one firm or other association. It was finally decided to abolish the districts and form clubs. Mr Martin said that they could not carry on as they did last year. At present West End had the best players, and at present many of them could not get a game owing tb the districts restrictions. It was proposed that the canvassers appointed should be limited to getting fifteen playing members, until the next meeting, when the matter could be gone into fully, with the numbers of members before them.—

Carried." The chairman said that at next meeting he would propose that the present district names should he altogether dropped. Tho following canvassers were appointed : Kia Kaha, Mr. AVillock; Te Rau, Mr. Olsen; Trinity, Mr. Lewis; Gisborne, Mr. Wilson ; City, Mr Martin.

It was decided that two delegates from each club should meet the Association next Wednesday with the list

of members. The opinion was expressed that during the coming season a referees’ association should be formed.

The chairman said the incoming Association should endeavor to give some encouragement to schoolboys. The Association had not much money, but they could do something towards giving the matter a start.

Air Olsen said that there were a good number of fair players among the boys at the school. They were thoroughly tutored in Rugby football, and there seemed no reason why the same should not be done with hockey.
