The late Dr. Rudall of Melbourne, held a diploma that was yellow with age; it was issued in 1854. He did many things in his life; among others he helped in the last search for the frozen bones of Franklin, the Pole-hunter.’
A curiosity in tomato plants is mentioned in the Feildiujf Star, tho product of cultivation by Mr TowIcr, of Feilding, who has grown a now kind of tomato. They are about die size of a large plum, red. round and of exquisite flavor. Unlike the ordinary tomato, they did not grow in bunches, but in rows along the branches, while they are very prolific, and the production per plant is enormous. Tho tomato has been named “Towler’s Beauty,” and it richly deserves the title.
A distressing incident caused the ;interruption of a burial service at ;Eaglehnwk, Victoria. The service ■was over, when a relative discovered that the remains had been interred in the wrong grave. Tho sexton persisted that there was no error, but it was eventually discovered that a mistake had been made. The remains were exhumed. Tlie mourners, who wore deeply moved by the untoward occurrence, bad to wait while another grave was being dug. Some of the young men attending the funeral assisted, and in less than an hour the new grave was completed, and tho remains were reinterred. It is asserted that the mistake was made owing to a similarity in the numbers of the two graves.
Justice Fitzgerald, before whom the sensational Tliaw case is being tried in New York, is one of tlio many Irishmen who have found their way to the Supreme Bench of the United States. Like some distinguished lawyers on this side, he first achieved considerable success in commercial life before entering the legal profession as a director of more than one of the big business houses in New York. With the Irish in America he is in great favor, and is president of that great social organisation which wields immense influence in tlio States.
The Pict-on Press has the following “fish” story: “'While a party of natives was engaged in gathering mussels at the Grove on Thursday they spied a largo shark swimming about near the s.hr-.re. With more pluck than caution a lad named Moses Love dived underneath the monster and grabbed it round tlio tail. After an exciting struggle, Love succeeded in dragging the fish, which is said to be an exceptionally large one—into Shallow water, and with the assistance. of Ills companions, landed it high and dry on tlio beach, where it ''as killed. The incident naturally Created a great deal of excitement amongst the members of the party, to one of whom we are indebted for details of the encounter.”
