DEFENCE LEAGUE.

NEW PLYMOUTH,' last night. At a well-attendccl. public meeting to-night under the auspices of the National Defence League it- was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Jennings, M.H.R., “That this meeting thoroughly endorses the sentiments promulgated by the National League of New Zealand in the direction of defence of the British Empire m creneral and New Zealand in particular, and pledges itself to support the principle that those who are proud of and receive the benefits of the British flag should be prepared to support and sustain the same, and for this purpose advocate the imiversal military training of all citizens.”

SCARLET FEVER. WELLINGTON, last night. There is at present an epidemic of scarlet fever in the city, and the ordinary hospital accommodation for such eases is quite full. During March thirty-two cases were reported, the great majority of which Wt’ic in the latter half of the month. Since the beginning of the present month (ten days ago), twenty-six fresh cases have been reported. The epidemic has not been located in any particular district or school, nor can it be attributed t'o any particular milk supplyIt is widely distributed.
