The Lyttelton Times, says regarding the Rakaia collision: —“Tlie Department has to exjilain why two night trains were to pass at q flag station, where no one would he on duty, and why no check was exercised on the trains. There can have been no great difficulty in planning the passing of the trains, seeing that they had the line practically to themselves, and if any ordinary precaution had been exercised it would- have been impossible for either driver to proceed beyond the appointed crossing place. The wreckage of the trains, seen in broad daylight, showed how miraculous had been tlie escape from a terrible disaster, but it should not need a long death roll to teach the Department the nocesssity for exercising a check upon its arrangements at every point,”
