The West Coast papers are publishing the following:—At Broken River a lady travelling from East to West was considerably hampered with her luggage, hat-boxes, etc. Haying a child in her arms, and seeing a ’kindly-looking gentleman standing by, she approached him and said, “Mister, would you kindly put my luggage on the coach for me?” The gentleman smiled and readily .'omplied. The gentleman was then asked to “hold the baby” while the lady ascended the coach and seated herself,, which he did, “chucking” tho baby and seeming to enjoy the situation immensely. Presently the gentleman was addressed as “Your Excellency,” for it was the Governor who had been approached by the lady. The latter’s embarrassment on discovering who the kind gentleman was was plainly told by blushes and profuse apologies. The iittle incident, however. provided amusement lor their fellow-travellers. The Christchurch Press states:— Under the McNab regime the farmer is singled out as the one man who is to be denied the gratification of file very reasonable ambition to prosper in the world. _ A merchant, a lawyer, or even a mining speculator, Inis no hounds placed either on, his enterprise or the reward he.mav reap from his exertions. To the farmer alone the Government presumes to say, “Thus far and no farther shall thou prosper.” Is this fair to those .who are really alter all the backbone of' the country? Is such a provision- likely to make the sons of New. Zealand farmers feel proud of their country anil anxious to stay in it, qr is- it not likely to drive them further afield where they may enjoy unfettered scope for their enterprise, and give lull fling to their ambition? Why does Mr. McNab so studiously ignore this aspect of the question? It would lie far better if he were to deal with this instead of making unfair and misleading statements about the large landowners, and perpetually trotting out the absurd Story about the poor map who hid up to 1:22 per acre for some land valued at £ll, and “had to go hack to the “labor market” because ho could not get the land. The Chief Justice of New South Wales, Sir Frederick Darlev, is one of those who believe tliaf tlh! buy of libel ought to be amended (says the Sydney Daily Telegraph). “J think,” said he last week, in summing-up to a jury in the Singleton libel action, “that the law here ought to he as it is in England, and that tho Press ought not to labor under the difficulties it is compelled to labor under here.” Having pointed out ijiat the i case iioav before the Court ‘‘was not one affected by such difficulties, ho went on:—“No honorable proprietors of newspapers ever ask to have the liberty of libelling their fellow-citi-zens. What they ask- is to have the right to report, without any danger of actions against them, what takes place at public meetings and other places, and have the right to comn ent freely upop them. $ the law in England, and they ask for what is the law in England.”
