PICNIC AND SPOlt'l’S, There was a fair crowd yesterday at the picnic and sports hold on the Gisborne Racing Club’s course op Monday, for the purpose of raising funds for the. Sip.vw.rk'hl- Memorial Fountain. Messrs. J. Towitley, J. C. Nisbett, G. L. Wildish, W. Howard, and J. McLaughlin had charge of the 1 gathering, and help in various, ways was given by Messrs. Turner, Adams, Scott, Little, and Totyplnv (2). Messrs. Hoy/ayd and Nisbptt acted ns hainllcappors for the various race’s. Mis. Scott, the secretary, was indefatigable in all' departments, A lot of ’amusement was g<>t by the children out of . a merry-go-round operated t.y Mr. John Somervell. Innumerable races, ' tugs-of-war, and other contests were provided for girls and boys; and the boys caused much amusement by their antics in much amusement by theirantice in thy appel-and-trea-c-le competition. The afternoon tea ’ department, which was well patronised, was under the direction of the following: Mr, Vosper, Mesdamcs J. JD. Fraser, Little, Maynard, Rowley, Vosper and West, and Misses Cole. Goldsmith and McConville (2). Other department- were stats fed as follows:—Bar, Miss McConville and Mr. OlHaliorau ; work stall, Mrs. Graham; bran-pie and sweets, Misses Oakley and Walker. There were a hundred starters for tlie boys’ mile race, which caused great excitement. The race resulted: W. Reddell, 35 yds, 1; Grant, 75 yds, 2; C. .Neill, 50 yds, 3. The scratch man, Hill, was fourth. When about threequarters of a mile had been run, Neill and Reddell were alternately in the lead, Reddell having the lead near the finish. Neill was caught napping by Grant near the post, and was beaten for second place hy a few feet. G. Fromm won tit egg and spoon race after six heats. A team of married ladies demonstrated the superiority, of the connubial state by beating a team of unmarried ladies in good style. A team from the City Band (which played ' selections throughout the day) beat a team of butchers from the Haiti works in a tug-o’-war, by three pulls to two. There was a fair entry for the men’s 100 yds. race, which was w: a by C. Glasgow. Campbell won tlie men’s mile race, Kent being second. The 100 yds. girls’ lace resulted in a dead heat between Miss Walsh (3 yds.) and Miss Lawless (scr.), Miss Walsh winning the run-off.
