On Tuesday afternoon last the first, meeting of the local Axemen’s Association took place. Despite dull weather a good crowd, including many ladies, assembled; and watched the proceedings with lively interest. The promoters are to bo congratulated ui)Oii providing an excellent afternoon’s sport, and also upon getting the events off at the times stated 'upon the programme. Tho last event was started at four o’clock precisely, and tho public were enabled to got homo in good timo. There were no protests, officials and competitor's working together harmoniously. Good entries wore received for all four events,and the hnmlicappei-s bad done their work r;o well that some very exciting finishes were seen, only a blow or tivo separating the first and second men. As the conduct of an axemen’s contest was entirely now to the officials, the fact of its being worked so well is very creditable. Prise money and expenses totalled £‘•so, and tho meeting has come out with a credit of over £l.O. The following was the programme:— Standing chop (open), loin, log; first prize £7 10s, second £2 10s : T. Gannon, lOsce, 1 ; T. Cnnolo, loscc, 2. Also started: George Jolly and H, Banes scr., A. AVoodberry loscc. B. Douglas and C. Jolly 25soc, Kindburg 30see. Crawford, Henderson, Babbiugton, _ Martin and .Hyland (all SO see), were disqualified for making a false start. Time, lmin SOseo.
