HOUSE AND TRADE REFUSE.
Tin, Council at present removes tile refuse from all premises, but does not touch trade reiuse. The cost is approximately £2OO per annum and the quantity of mat’crinl handled per annum eipials about 1716 loads at 2s 3.1 d per load. In almost every case wooden boxes are used as., receptacles for flic rubbish and are placed close to the back of tlie bouse. They are invariably open, and constitute feeding grounds for rats, ill. l and all serte of vermin.. Tho Council should make the use of galvanised iron rubbish bins -imperative. Tho cost won ill not he groat, and a bin .similar to the model of one shown at tlie last Council meeting would prove very suitable.”
Cr. Sheridan said that the Engineer stated that a sewerage system would have to bo 'faced in the near future. This would be one of the first things that- the incoming Council would consider and it scorned out of place to try to- tinker with the sci i ice. He thought, that there was no necessity far a duplicate pail. The Engineer said that one pan w ts taken away and not returned till ago they hadnext day.
Cr. Sheridan said that some time ago they had been advised not to have anything to do with enamelled pans, which were recommended by the Engineer. He was against the work being let by contract. If the Council did the wor kthc.v would save flic contractors’ profit. The rubbish bins recommended were excellent. The Mayor said ho understood that iron paps were being tarred in preference to using enamelled pans. In Timaru there had been a water service for twenty years, but their sanitation was the same as Gisborne.
Cr. Bright said the present system was hideous and the ooner this progressive Borough changed tlie system the better.
Tlie report was held over for consideration.
