PERRY’S ROYAL SPECIALTY COMPANY.
His Alajesty’s Theatre was comfortably filled last night when Perry’s Specialty Company submitted a programme of variety items and a series of cinematograph pictures. All the items were well received and all the performers wore encored. Kershaw, the illusionist, was the bright particular star of the evening, and contributed largely to the evening’s entertainment. He did a number of card tricks of a marvellous nature, and was especially popular in a trick in which lie supplied to the audience any drinks they cared to call for. His cabinet trick was also well received, and a trick played with a serviette ring, which called for a good deal of “patter,” caused a great deal of amusement. Another “turn” which was niuch appreciated was that of Atlias, tho man on wheels. He rolled along on his skates in all positions, and went through a great variety of grotesque evolutions. An intricate glide among a dozen bottles showed him to be a complete master of the skates, and bis feat of skating up to three chairs, placed one besido the other, and jumping over them was the most popular item on the programme. Vocal music was supplied in plenty. Aliss Eva YVynyard, a petite soubrette, was encored on both occasions she appeared, her coon and other popular songs catching on at once with the audience. Comic songs woro contributed by . Air. Stanley Chester, who was eminently successful in hitting the popular taste, and who was accorded a triple encore. Illustrated ballads, which are always popular, were given by Air. Howard Rossington, who was also encored.
The pictures submitted met with popular favor. The magical section was represented by “The Birth of the butterfly,” a pretty, well-arranged picture. The humorous department was very much in evidence, "What tile policeman saw,” a few dark spots with the bull’s-eye turned on them, being especially well received. A long film, showing a determined attempt to rob a train, was very interesting, and was watched with interest throughout. This evening there will he a complete change of programme in all departments, on the occasion of the company’s last appearance in Gisborne.
