A century ago Pall Mall was packed with sightseers, gazing openmouthed at the row of gas-jets which blazed for the first time between St. .Tames’ Palace and Cockspur Street; for it was the Londoners’ introduction to the magic and mystery of gas lighting. Sir Humphrey Davy had pooh-boohed t-lio possibility of such a liiminant; and Sir Walter Scott had scoffed at the “madman” who proposed to “light London with smoke”; and yet hero were the eyes of thousands blinking under the lights which tile high priests of science had declared impossible. It was true that Murdoch's house in Cornwall had blazed with gas-light nine years earlier, and that in the year of Trafalgar 1000 burners had turned night into day in Philips and Lee’s factory at Salford ; but a London thoroughfare ablaze from end to end with gas was, as an enthusiastic reporter declared, the “eighth wonder of the world.” Nearly six years later a row of gas-lights spanned the Thames at Westminster; and before Waterloo was won London had ceased to marvel at its new ill nmiuant.
