A DISGRACEFUL SCENE
SAVAGE ATTACK ON CONSTABLE. A disgraceful scene was witnessed in Carnarvon street last evening. Earlier in the day an individual called at the police station and peremptorily insisted that a constable /fhoitld accompany him to a hotel where he bad been refused liquor, so that he could there demand a drink. He was informed that the police had no such power. In the evening this man, in company with another man, carried on in a turbulent manner in Carnarvon street, and Constable Hancox approached them and gave them some friendly advice, saying that they would do well to proceed quietly home. In response tlie men turned and abused the constable, who, for his part, said he would have to arrest both of them. The constable caught hold of both men, but one wrenched himself free, the other putting up a furious struggle in the mud. Later the man who had made his escape returned and struck the constable, whereupon the latter left the man lie had in custody in prilcr to make sure of the other one. This man was soon secured, when the man who was free returned to the attack very viciously and the constable thought it would be better to make sure of him; but no sooner was be bold fast by the constable than, his
Iriond Tlgsin attacked Ibe constable. A crowd quickly gathered and the sympathy was with tlio constable, but nobody seemed to like to take a hand in the struggle in the mud. One gentleman managed to keep off one of the mou while the constable handcuffed the other, who, with some assistance, was then bundled Into a cab. Both men wfcro safely lodged in the lockup, and will appear at tho I’olico Court this morning.
